Place matters. The food we enjoy in Vermont reflects the state's farmers, landscape, and history. I enjoy nothing more than introducing guests to the people, farms, and flavors that make Vermont a truly unique place to live and eat. For the 2016 season, I will be offering a mozzarella cheesemaking workshop, wine tour, and cheese tour. I look forward to meeting you!
-Chris Howell, Vermont Farm Tours

Chris founded Vermont Farm Tours in 2009 and is active in Vermont's local food and agriculture scene, serving on the board of Slow Food Vermont and Farm to Plate's Agritourism Task Force. In his spare time, Chris is an avid skier, mountain biker, gardener, winemaker, and cook. He also runs Cocktail Walk, a Thursday evening stroll to three of Winooski, Vermont's best restaurants for craft cocktails and appetizers.

We wanted to do a more personal hands-on experience and we were rewarded with a very knowledgeable instructor in Chris Howell. Bread and Butter Farm was a beautiful location. Hearing the vision of the couple who own the farm was inspiring. Doesn’t get much better than freshly picked tomatoes, basil, bread and a locally brewed cold beer.

Chris had everything well organized and the lunch was delicious. Learned a lot at Bread & Butter farm as well about winter farming. The scenery was gorgeous. Definitely recommend this as a great way to see & taste Vermont!

My husband and I wanted to learn more about Vermont farms and the cheese-making process, so we took the two-hour cheese making class. Held at beautiful Bread and Butter Farm in Shelburne, we enjoyed a fascinating program that included learning about milk production, cows and pastures, and the cheese making process itself. We and two other couples got to take turns doing the steps necessary to make mozzarella cheese. Our farm tour included the opportunity to pick herbs and fresh vegetables to enjoy with our cheese when it was finished. We then enjoyed eating our cheese toasted on fresh bread made right at the farm kitchen where we met. A lovely, tasty, and very interesting way to spend a morning.

We had an excellent cheesemaking workshop at Vermont Farm Tours with Chris. Our two young children loved the opportunity to master the steps to make fresh mozzarella, and were thrilled to create their own cheese by hand (and to be able to eat it on the spot). They also enjoyed a tour around the farm, including the opportunity to visit chickens, a greenhouse, and a huge baker’s oven. Recommended for small family groups.

First-rate artisan cheese tour—not to be missed!

Chris, the owner and expert guide, is professional, knowledgeable about cheese and wine, and has strong ties to the local farmers and artisans. We visited three venues in the Burlington area and got to experience up-close operation of cheese-making and farming that we could not have done on our own without a lot of work. Sit back and enjoy the comfortable ride through the Vermont countryside.

Great Cheesemaking Workshop

As experiential tourism operators ourselves, we like to meet locals and take part in unique hands on activities when we travel. That’s why we selected Vermont Farm Tours while visiting Vermont in December on our way to Ontario for Christmas with family. Chris was a wonderful and knowledgeable host who met us at Bread and Butter Farm where we learned about the Vermont Farm Trust program....what a forward thinking initiative! After a tour of the kale greenhouses, we settled in the back of the bakery to try our hand at making mozzerella cheese. It was amazingly easy and tasted fantastic. It all got eaten by our relatives during Christmas!

An amazing Vermont wine experience!

It was our first time in Vermont and my husband and I could not decide whether to tour the wineries ourselves or hire a tour company who could lend some local knowledge to the day. We most definitely made the right choice with Vermont Farm Tours. Chris, the owner, was just fabulous. He brought us to three beautiful wineries in which his personal relationships with the owners allowed us to have private tours as well as meet some of the owners and hear their individual backgrounds and specialties with wine making. It allowed us to appreciate the tasting so much more learning the history and the art of each of the wines. Chris added wonderful special touches to the tour including incredible cheese pairings (and a little dark chocolate too!). He prepared us a delicious picnic lunch made with all fresh Vermont ingredients, which we enjoyed amid vineyards and mountainous views. During the drive he pointed out beautiful scenery and educated us on Vermont living, agriculture and was able to in depth, answer any questions we had. Thanks to Chris, we will truly enjoy drinking our Vermont wines that we purchased as I now feel each bottle has its own little “personality.” Chris’s knowledge, experience, and passion for all the wonderful places and agriculture Vermont has to offer is evident in what he does. Vermont Farm Tours are not just tours... they are truly unforgettable experiences!
